Get Rid of Acne Scars Fast?

Acne is unsightly and acne scars can be even more unattractive. Is there a way to get rid of acne scars fast?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is no acne treatment that will work overnight despite various claims. Treatment performed by a dermatologist requires a diagnosis followed by treatment and follow-up. This can sometimes take up to several months for all removal of acne scars. For at-home treatments, expect to see results in 4-8 weeks in order to see any skin improvement. It’s important to note that you must continue your skin treatment to prevent future breakouts that may again cause scarring.

Now that you know there’s not a miracle cream or treatment that will get rid of acne scars fast, what are some ways that you can reduce or remove acne scars in real time?

Adapted from WebMD, these methods and products might just do the trick for you in minimizing scars.

Get Rid of Scars with These At-Home Remedies

Concealer. Use the right shade of concealer to hide acne scars for a brief period of time. Though this isn’t an effective way to get rid of scars permanently, this is an effective way of getting rid of scars quick enough for special engagements, dates, etc.

Gel Sheeting. Place a gel sheet on red, dark or raised scars. Silicon gel sheeting has been proven to soften, flatten, and fade scars. These sheets can be purchased at your local pharmacy or from your dermatologist. For best results use silicon gel sheeting for at least three months.

Petroleum Jelly. There’s no real evidence that creams containing Vitamin E or cocoa butter reduce the appearance of scars. Putting on a little dab of petroleum jelly can keep the scar area moist which reduces peeling and itching—two main reasons people tend to pick at scars making them worse.

Sunscreen. Not only does the sun cause wrinkles and increase skin aging, but it can also slow down healing as well as darkens acne scars. Darkened acne scars make them that much more noticeable to others. Be sure to wear sunscreen that contains zinc or titanium oxide and is an SPF of 30 or higher.

Bleaching creams. Sometimes lightening up scars can reduce their appearance to others. Different creams for hyperpigmentation, fading dark scars, should be addressed with a dermatologist.

Filler Treatments. Collagen injections have been proven to raise sunken scars. This method will need to be repeated, as it is not a permanent solution.

Dermabrasion. Removing the top layer of skin can help minimize scarring. Be sure to work with a dermatologist as this method requires special equipment. Microdermasion is also available as a less invasive process.

Surgery. Changing a scar’s size, depth and color is possible with surgery. Note that surgery can not remove the entire scar and some scars, such as keloid scars, should not involve surgery as it can make matters worse.

Laser Resurfacing. There are two options for this method. Lasers can remove the skin’s surface or the top layer of skin can stay put while lasers work on the collagen in the skin to help raise pocketed scars.

Steroid Injections. Cortisone or other steroids can be injected into the scarred areas to help flatten scars. This procedure usually requires more time to be effective.

Time. Sometimes patience and time are all that are needed. Most scars will gradually fade over time.

While it may be impossible to get rid of acne scars fast, it’s possible to reduce scarring with the methods and procedures above. You just need to know that erasing scars will take some time.
